  • This image is a traditional Byzantine-style Orthodox icon depicting the Baptism of Jesus Christ in the Jordan River, an event also known as the Theophany.

    Main Figures
    Jesus Christ: Positioned in the center, standing in the waters of the Jordan River. He wears a white loincloth and has a cruciform halo bearing the Greek letters "IC XC" (an abbreviation for Jesus Christ). His right hand is slightly raised in a gesture of blessing.

    John the Baptist: Standing on the rocky bank to the left, wearing his traditional rough garments made of camel's hair. He extends his right hand over the head of Jesus to perform the baptism.

    The Holy Spirit: At the top center, a semicircular sphere represents the open heavens. A ray of light descends from it, containing a white dove that symbolizes the Holy Spirit descending upon Christ.

    The Angels: On the right bank, three angels bow in reverence towards Jesus. Their hands are respectfully covered by their brightly colored red and green cloaks, a traditional sign of veneration.

    Details in the Water
    Aquatic Life: The stylized blue river is heavily populated with various swimming fish.

    Defeated Serpents: Jesus' feet rest upon a small rectangular slab or broken gates. Beneath this platform, coiled serpents or sea dragons are depicted in the water, symbolizing Christ crushing evil and the powers of the underworld.

    Allegorical Personifications: At the very bottom of the river, there are small mythological figures. The older male figure pouring water from a vessel personifies the Jordan River itself, while the figure riding a sea monster personifies the Sea. An octopus is also clearly visible in the bottom center.

    Artistic Style and Markings
    Background: The icon features a classic flat gold leaf background, representing divine light, with stylized, sharp, jagged mountain peaks framing the scene.
