  • Early Life and Conversion José Muñoz-Cortés was born in 1948 in Valparaíso, Chile, into a devout Catholic family. As a young man, he became fascinated by Eastern Orthodox Christianity and iconography. He eventually converted to the Orthodox faith, becoming a member of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia (ROCOR). He relocated to Canada, settling in Montreal, where he worked as an art teacher and iconographer.

The Montreal Iveron Icon Brother José's life changed forever in 1982 during a pilgrimage to Mount Athos in Greece. While visiting the Nativity of Christ skete, he felt an overwhelming spiritual connection to a contemporary copy of the ancient Iveron Icon of the Mother of God. Though he tried to purchase it, the monks initially refused. However, as he was leaving, the abbot unexpectedly handed him the icon, telling him it was a gift and that it belonged with him in North America.

A few weeks after returning to Montreal, José awoke to find the icon spontaneously exuding a fragrant oil known as myrrh. This was recognized as a profound miracle by the Orthodox Church.

Years of Ministry For the next 15 years, Brother José dedicated his life entirely to being the faithful guardian of the myrrh-streaming Montreal Iveron Icon. He lived a strict, monastic lifestyle and traveled constantly across the globe. He visited parishes, monasteries, and hospitals, allowing thousands of faithful to venerate the icon. Despite the immense attention, he remained deeply humble, never accepted money for his travels or himself, and viewed his role strictly as a servant to the Mother of God.

Martyrdom and Disappearance of the Icon Tragically, on the night of October 30-31, 1997, Brother José was brutally tortured and murdered in a hotel room in Athens, Greece. Following his assassination, the Montreal Iveron Icon vanished completely and its whereabouts remain unknown to this day.

Legacy Brother José is buried at the Holy Trinity Monastery in Jordanville, New York. Today, he is highly venerated by many Orthodox Christians worldwide as "Martyr José." His grave has become a major site of continuous pilgrimage, and he is remembered for his profound devotion, humility, and the ultimate sacrifice he made for his faith.
