Christ is shown seated on a majestic throne, wearing a royal crown and golden vestments. His right hand is raised in a traditional gesture of blessing, forming the Christogram IC XC (an abbreviation of “Jesus Christ” in Greek). In His left hand, He holds an open Gospel book.
The throne emphasizes His divine authority and heavenly kingship. The lions at the base of the throne recall the throne of King Solomon (1 Kings 10:18–20) and symbolize power, majesty, and righteous judgment.
The open Gospel typically contains the words from John 8:12:
“I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”
The golden background represents the uncreated divine light — a common element in Byzantine iconography.
