  • Meaning of the Icon

This icon depicts Jesus Christ as the Great High Priest, one of the most profound and theological representations of Christ in Orthodox iconography.

In this image, Christ is not shown as a Judge or King, but as the Heavenly High Priest who intercedes between God and humanity. He is the eternal Priest who offered Himself as a sacrifice for the salvation of the world.

This image is based on the words of the Epistle to the Hebrews (Hebrews 4:14–16; 7:24–27) which say:

“We have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens—Jesus, the Son of God.”

    👑 Vestments and Symbols

    • Christ wears priestly vestments, including the omophorion (a symbol of priestly authority) and the richly decorated sakkos (the liturgical robe).

    • The crown (mitre) on His head symbolizes divine glory and royal authority, for Christ is also King of Kings.

    • His right hand is raised in blessing, forming the letters IC XC, the Greek abbreviation for “Jesus Christ.”

    • The open Gospel book symbolizes the Word of God and the proclamation of the Good News.

    📖 Inscription on the Book

The text in the open Gospel reads:

“Peace I leave with you, My peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”
    (John 14:27)

This verse expresses the heart of the icon’s message: the peace Christ gives is divine, not of this world, and it fills the heart with serenity and courage.

    Spiritual Message

    This icon reminds us that:

    • Christ is our eternal Intercessor before God the Father.

    • He is the Priest who offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice for our redemption.

    • He gives us His peace—a peace that no one can take away.

In Orthodox churches, this icon is often placed above the Royal Doors of the iconostasis, symbolizing that every Divine Liturgy is the heavenly service of Christ the High Priest, who leads the faithful toward the Kingdom of Heaven.
