Hieromartyr Bessarion of Lainici was a Romanian Orthodox priest and confessor of the faith who suffered martyrdom during the communist persecution of the Church in Romania in the 20th century.
Born at the beginning of the 1900s into a devout Orthodox Christian family, Bessarion was raised in the fear of God and love for the Church. From a young age he showed a strong inclination toward prayer, ascetic discipline, and service to others. Answering God’s call, he pursued theological studies and was ordained to the holy priesthood, later becoming a monk and serving in connection with Lainici Monastery, one of the spiritual centers of Romanian Orthodoxy.
Father Bessarion was known as a zealous shepherd of souls, a man of deep prayer, humility, and unwavering faith. During the years of the atheistic communist regime, he openly confessed Christ and refused to compromise the teachings of the Orthodox Church. Because of this, he became a target of the authorities, who sought to silence faithful clergy and eradicate religious life.
He was arrested, interrogated, and subjected to severe physical and psychological torture. Despite immense suffering, he remained steadfast, refusing to renounce his faith or betray the Church. Strengthened by prayer and the grace of God, he endured his trials with patience and forgiveness toward his persecutors.
Hieromartyr Bessarion reposed in the Lord as a result of the tortures he endured, sealing his confession with his blood. His martyrdom became a living testimony of faithfulness to Christ in an age of persecution.
The Romanian Orthodox Church glorified him among the saints, honoring him as a Hieromartyr and Confessor, and commemorates his holy memory on November 10. Today, the faithful venerate him as an intercessor before God and a model of courage, obedience, and love for Christ unto death.
Holy Hieromartyr Bessarion of Lainici, pray to God for us.
