  • Saint Cleopas (in the world: Constantin Ilie) was born on April 10, 1912, in Sulița, Botoșani County, Romania, into a devout peasant family. From childhood he was raised in deep faith and simplicity. In 1929, together with his older brother, he entered Sihăstria Monastery in northeastern Romania.

He was tonsured a monk in 1937 and received the name Cleopas. Known for his humility, obedience, and love of prayer, he was ordained a hierodeacon in 1944 and later a hieromonk. During the difficult years of communist persecution in Romania, Father Cleopas was forced several times to withdraw into the mountains to live in hiding as a hermit. There he practiced intense prayer, fasting, and spiritual struggle.

After returning to the monastery, he became abbot of Sihăstria and one of the most beloved spiritual fathers in Romania. Thousands of faithful—monks, priests, and laypeople—came to him for confession and counsel. His teachings were simple, deeply rooted in Scripture and the Holy Fathers, and focused on repentance, humility, obedience, and unceasing prayer.

He reposed in the Lord on December 2, 1998. Because of his holy life and spiritual influence, he was glorified as a saint by the Romanian Orthodox Church in the 21st century. His memory is kept with great reverence, especially in Romania.

    --------------------------------

Saint Paisius (in the world: Petru Olaru) was born on June 20, 1897, in the village of Stroiești, Suceava County, Romania. From a young age he showed a deep inclination toward prayer and spiritual life. In 1921 he entered Cozancea Monastery and later came to Sihăstria Monastery, where he became known for his gentleness and profound spiritual wisdom.

He was ordained a priest-monk and became one of the most sought-after confessors in Romania. For decades he guided monks, nuns, priests, and laypeople with fatherly love and discernment. He was especially known for his patience, kindness, and the gift of comforting souls in distress.

Even during the communist era, when the Church faced heavy restrictions, Father Paisius remained steadfast in his ministry of confession and spiritual guidance. He encouraged frequent prayer, repentance, forgiveness, and trust in God’s mercy.

He reposed peacefully on October 18, 1990, at Sihăstria Monastery. After his repose, many faithful testified to his sanctity and spiritual help. He too was glorified as a saint by the Romanian Orthodox Church.
