  • Dimitry Ivanovich, known as "Donskoy" (of the Don), was the Grand Prince of Moscow and Vladimir. He is a celebrated saint in the Russian Orthodox Church, known for his piety, his defense of Orthodox Christianity, and his unification of the Russian lands.

Ascending to the throne at a young age during a tumultuous period, Dimitry became the first prince to openly challenge the Mongol-Tatar Yoke. His reign is most famous for the historic Battle of Kulikovo in 1380, where he led the united Russian forces to a decisive victory against the Golden Horde. Before the battle, he received a blessing and counsel from Saint Sergius of Radonezh, emphasizing his role as a defender of the faith.

Despite this great victory, Dimitry continued to face challenges and raids, but he is remembered for strengthening Moscow’s power and fostering the Russian Church. In his later years, he fell ill and died at the age of 39. He was glorified (canonized) as a saint for his Christian virtues, his humility, and his efforts to protect his people.
