Saint Ignatius of Antioch, also known as Theophorus ("God-bearer"), was an early Christian martyr, an Apostolic Father, and a foundational figure in the early Church.

• Early Leadership: He served as the third Bishop of Antioch in Syria, succeeding Saint Peter and Evodius. Tradition holds that he was a direct disciple of the Apostle John.

• Journey to Martyrdom: During the reign of the Roman Emperor Trajan (around 108 AD), Ignatius was arrested for his Christian faith and condemned to death. He was placed under heavy guard and transported across land and sea from Antioch to Rome to face public execution.

• The Seven Epistles: Along his arduous journey, he wrote seven highly influential letters to various Christian communities (such as the Ephesians, Romans, and Smyrnaeans) and to Polycarp. These epistles are critical to early Christian theology, heavily emphasizing church unity, the central authority of the bishop, and the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist.

• Martyrdom: Upon reaching Rome, Ignatius was executed in the arena by being thrown to wild beasts—traditionally lions, which is why they frequently accompany him in Orthodox iconography. He embraced his martyrdom with profound joy, famously writing to the Romans that he wished to be "ground like wheat by the teeth of wild beasts, so that I may be found to be the pure bread of Christ."

The feast day of Saint Ignatius of Antioch is observed on different dates depending on the church tradition:

• Eastern Orthodox Church: His primary feast day is celebrated on December 20. (The translation of his relics is also commemorated on January 29).

• Roman Catholic Church (and Western tradition): His feast day is celebrated on October 17.
