According to the information provided to us by the Acts of the Apostles and the Epistles of the Apostle Paul, Timothy was his most beloved disciple and one of the closest associates of the Apostle Paul. His name is Greek and means the one who honors God, but also the one who honors God.
Saint Apostle Timothy was born in Lystra, Lycaonia, to a Greek father and a Jewish mother, Eunice. He was left a very young orphan by his father and his grandmother, Loida, raised him "in the education and instruction of the Lord". When the apostle Paul visited Lystra, appreciating his spiritual gifts and his fiery missionary zeal, he educated him properly and accompanied him on the NW apostolic tour where he lived all the adventures of the leading apostle to spread the Gospel message. After the martyrdom of Paul, he returned to Ephesus and continued his missionary activity.
During a pagan festival of Artemis of Ephesus, he was severely beaten and martyred by an enraged pagan mob for criticizing their orgies.
His body was transferred in the year 356 AD. during the reign of Constantine in Constantinople, in the church of the Holy Apostles. It celebrates on the 22nd of January of each year.
