Saint John the Baptist, also known as the Forerunner, was the last and greatest of the prophets who prepared the way for the coming of Christ. He lived a life of prayer, repentance, and asceticism in the wilderness, proclaiming: “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.”
John baptized the Lord Jesus Christ in the Jordan River and bore witness to Him as the Messiah. He fearlessly defended the truth and openly rebuked Herod Antipas for his unlawful marriage to Herodias.
Because of his faithfulness and courage, Saint John was imprisoned and ultimately beheaded at the request of Herodias. His holy martyrdom is commemorated by the Orthodox Church on August 29.
