Theotokos Eleousa of Kykkos
The icon of the Theotokos Eleousa of Kykkos (Greek: Παναγία Ελεούσα του Κύκκου) is one of the most venerated icons of the Virgin Mary in the Orthodox Christian tradition. The original icon is kept at the Holy Monastery of Kykkos in Cyprus and is traditionally believed to have been painted by Saint Luke the Evangelist.
In this icon, the Virgin Mary (Theotokos) is depicted tenderly holding the Christ Child in her arms. Their faces gently touch, expressing deep love and divine compassion — the essence of the term “Eleousa”, which means “Merciful” or “Tender-hearted”. The Mother of God gazes outward with serenity and compassion, inviting the faithful to find refuge and comfort in her intercession.
Christ, portrayed as a young child, rests affectionately against His Mother, holding a scroll — a symbol of divine wisdom and the Word of God. His right arm often embraces His Mother or gives a blessing, emphasizing both His divinity and His intimate human bond with her.
The red and gold colors in the icon symbolize divine majesty, eternal life, and the heavenly kingdom. The inscriptions — ΜΡ ΘΥ (abbreviation for Μήτηρ Θεοῦ, “Mother of God”) and ΙϹ ΧϹ (for Jesus Christ) — affirm the sacred identity of the figures.
The Kykkotissa (of Kykkos) is particularly known as a wonderworking icon, revered for miracles and divine protection throughout the centuries. It is celebrated by the Orthodox Church, especially in Cyprus, as a source of mercy, healing, and spiritual consolation.
