Gifted with special spiritual abilities, he acquired great theological and door-to-door training. However, he soon retired to an estate on the Bosphorus, where he devoted himself to the practice and study of the Holy Scriptures. But the emperor forced him to take over the management of the great poorhouse of Constantinople.
